The house. 175,000 euros (milatos) Ref AG1
An ideal house for year round living. It has oil-fired central heating to all areas, as well as air-conditioned bedrooms.
Originally a stable, it was converted to be a comfortable and quite spacious two bedroom house, with all modern fittings.
There are patios front and back. The one at the back is a kind of walled sunken area which is very private and a real suntrap for the spring and autumn. At the front there is also a private parking area for one car. There is also a large tiled roof terrace with lovely sea and mountain views in nearly all directions.
Inside, there is an open plan kitchen with an adjacent dining area, and a large living area with French doors to the back patio. The master bedroom has an en-suite shower room, and upstairs there is another shower room and a second bedroom, which is a good size double. Both bedrooms have built-in wardrobes.
In the kitchen, the fridge-freezer and dishwasher are included in the sale, as of course are the built-in hob and oven.
Milatos village
Milatos is actually two villages. The older more traditional part, and the newer beachside development about 1 km away. The old village is located back from the sea at a point where there was natural spring water in the old days. Old Milatos has managed to retain a certain charm and there are many old stone houses that have been restored. The property for sale is in the old village.
There are two or three places to eat and drink, both summer and winter, and the village is small enough that you can always walk to anywhere you might need to go. In the winter, things are quiet, but the village does not become a ghost town like some Cretan villages that rely solely on tourism.
In Milatos Beach, a 15 minute walk, or 2 minute drive, from the old village, you will find many waterside tavernas serving the usual Greek menus, but with an emphasis on fish, much of which is landed by the local boats at Milatos Harbour. There is a small shingle beach which only rarely gets more than a handful of bathers.
A boat could be moored in the harbour; at present there are no mooring fees!
Old Milatos has one small mini-market, and in Milatos Beach there are two more plus a patisserie and two gift shops. Both villages are regularly served by travelling salesmen who bring fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, and bread. The old village also has a visiting doctor once a week!
The house. 125,000 euros (nofalias) Ref AG2
The house is stone built, with traditional wooden windows and shutters. It was originally owned by the village cobbler.
It is single storey, but on two levels separated by five stone steps. It has a living area with open plan kitchen. The kitchen has a built-in hob and oven, and a fridge-freezer and washing machine are also included in the sale. All the appliances are brand new. There is an old stone fireplace which has been preserved, but no longer works. Instead there is a cast iron wood-burning stove.
There is a large double bedroom with built-in wardrobe. This room has French doors that open onto a spacious patio with a mature cypress tree giving shade from the hot summer sun.
The bathroom is quite spacious and has a huge walk-in shower area with a seating area should you get tired whilst showering!
The bedroom and bathroom are separated from the living area by five stone steps and a small lobby.
Outside there are two separate patio areas with ample room to eat and relax. Also there is a traditional stone stairway up to the split level roof terrace.
The roof terrace is fully tiled and protected by wooden railings and parapet walls, and offers ample room for sunbathing, with wonderful views of the village, the surrounding hills, and the sea in two directions.
Nofalias Village
Nofalias is quite a sleepy little place, in a lovely setting with sea views in two different directions. It has some lovely old ruins, some scruffy modern houses, and a handful of nicely restored stone houses. The old ladies of the village still get together to bake bread and rusks in traditional stone ovens, and sheep are still slaughtered for Easter in the traditional way.
Nofalias is a place where you can just totally relax. No one will try to make you join in or bother you. Or you can get to know people if you wish. They are all genuinely friendly.
It is very peaceful and a great place for a writer, an artist, or a trainee hermit.
On the other hand, the market town of Neapoli is only 15 minutes away.
